Doctors and nutritionists are backing a new health plan described as the Mediterranean Diet with a twist - saying it will see you lose weight and protect your health. The Pioppi diet is inspired by the dietary and lifestyle habits of the residents of Pioppi, a small village in southern Italy, which is known for the longevity and health of its inhabitants.

The diet emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods, healthy fats, and a lifestyle that includes physical activity and social connections. The Pioppi diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that emphasizes the consumption of vegetables, nuts, seeds, fish, and olive oil while limiting processed foods, sugar, and refined carbohydrates.

It also includes moderate amounts of protein, mainly from fish and occasional meat, and encourages the consumption of dairy in the form of cheese and yogurt. The diet promotes fasting periods, such as skipping breakfast, and highlights the importance of lifestyle factors like regular physical activity, stress reduction, and strong social relationships.

Dr Markus Ploesser, Chief Innovation Officer, Psychiatrist, and Integrative Medicine Physician at Open Mind Health, said: "The Pioppi diet works by focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods and minimizing the intake of processed and high-carbohydrate foods, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation.

"The high intake of healthy fats from sources like olive oil, nuts, and fish supports cardiovascular health, while the diet's emphasis on vegetables and fibre aids in digestion and overall well-being. The lifestyle components of the Pioppi diet, such as regular physical activity and social engagement, contribute to its effectiveness by promoting holistic health and reducing stress.

"The Pioppi diet is based on research into the dietary habits and lifestyle factors of the residents of Pioppi, who have low rates of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. While specific studies on the Pioppi diet itself are limited, it draws heavily on the extensive research supporting the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, improve metabolic health, and enhance longevity. The Pioppi diet incorporates these principles while also including elements of intermittent fasting and reducing carbohydrate intake.

"Proponents of the Pioppi diet report various health benefits, including weight loss, improved blood sugar control, better cardiovascular health, and enhanced overall well-being. Anecdotal evidence suggests that people following the Pioppi diet experience reduced cravings for sugar and processed foods, increased energy levels, and improved mental clarity. However, as with any diet, individual results can vary, and more rigorous scientific studies are needed to fully validate the long-term health outcomes of the Pioppi diet specifically."
